Cabbies prefer safety shields to $2 night fee

Edmonton, Canada - Mandatory taxi safety shields would do more to improve late-night service in Edmonton than a recommended $2 evening surcharge, cab drivers told a city council committee today.
The six-month trial fee, which would be imposed on rides worth more than $15 between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, would only lead to disputes with passengers, said Abuzar Aslan of the 750-member United Drivers Association.
Instead, he'd like 20 cents added to every trip for three years to pay for shields, which would help protect drivers and make them more willing to work nights when bar patrons often have trouble getting home, he said during a public hearing.

Carjackers target taxi drivers

NEW DELHI: Carjackers are now choosing their targets after meticulous planning. Instead of zeroing in on any car on the road, they find it easy to target taxi drivers. Hire, kill and then drive away with the cab.
This seems to be the modus operandi. And a highly unorganised cab service in Delhi and a porous border are only making matters worse for the vulnerable taxi drivers.
The arrest of two persons earlier this week for sedating a taxi driver to death and then driving away with his car is a pointer to their growing fascination for cabs.
